Seemingly on either end of the spectrum of semiotics lie a four color "open" sign on the corner diner and yellow painted drums decorated with the image of a coiled rattlesnake. However, these two disparate items are closely connected within the inventory of SignAndFlag.com. One, a neon "open" sign, will make sure everyone knows you're open for business, and the other, the Gadsden Flag, is a rich emblem straight from the history books, perfect for the history classroom, any early American history buff, or just as a poignant reminder of American patriotism. We not only sell flags but we sell signs such as school signs, road signs, store signs, and more.
Like many bits and pieces from the Revolutionary War era, the symbolism and text on the Gadsden Flag can be traced directly to Benjamin Franklin himself. It was Franklin, after all, who published his rendering of a rattlesnake cut into 8 pieces with the slogan "Join, or Die" beneath. This earliest reference to the original colonies and to Franklin's satirical comments on the British policy of sending convicted criminals to the New World, evolved into the first "Don't Tread on Me" yellow drums and this most famous of historical flags (no one knows which came first). The flag came from Colonel Christopher Gadsden who offered it to the Navy's commander-in-chief. It was taken along on a 1775 mission organized to cut off British ships that were bringing ammunition and other war supplies to their troops. We have all kinds of American flags for sale to help you show your heritage.
